As coaches we believe in the power of reflection and goal setting. They guide much of the work we do, and so we wanted to share a process to guide you through goal setting and visioning for 2025.
It’s important to start off by saying: while we absolutely believe in the power of this process and use it ourselves – we also do it in our own time. And that means you do not have to race into this if you’re enjoying a break right now. Our invitation to you is to trust yourself and know that you can come to this (and in fact you can revisit it) at any time!
1️⃣ Reflect
Back in our December newsletter we shared 2024 reflection prompts (if you didn’t receive it you can download a copy here). Now’s the time to do them if you haven’t yet, or pull out your notes to review them. Even though it can be tempting to jump straight into the dopamine hit of setting new goals, reviewing the past year is an important part of the process that can teach us so much about ourselves.
2️⃣ Visioncasting
Taking into account your reflection and whatever you want to create or experience for yourself in 2025…
Who do you want to be in 2025?
What do you want to do (or not do) in 2025?
How do you want to live (or not live) in 2025?
You can journal, type, Pinterest, use Notion, create a vision board…whatever helps you create a vision that you can connect to for 2025. If you have a guiding word it may come to you through this process or you can include it here to help guide the process.
3️⃣ Getting specific
Now using your vision as a guide, what are your goals for 2025?
These are stated as the specific outcomes you want to achieve for yourself.
You may find it helpful to break your life into areas and set goals by area e.g. health, career, relationships.
Note: you do not have to work on a goal for each area of your life! We recommend working on 2-3 goals at a time. Know that you will keep coming back to and revisiting your vision and working on new goals as you grow and make your vision your reality throughout the year.
This part is important: to help keep yourself accountable and to build momentum, break the year down into segments and set a goal that is realistic for that timeframe (which is not to stay it won’t feel stretchy or challenging 😉). For example you may choose to set goals in 4 x 90 day blocks.
4️⃣ Make It Actionable
Here’s the difference-that-makes-a-difference! For each of your goals, ask yourself the following:
To make this goal happen…
Who do I need to be?
How do I need to show up each day?
How will I respond when it gets hard?
What habits do I need to have to achieve this goal?
Hint: You can use ChatGPT to help you with this step! Share your goals with it and then ask it to break down each goal into the individual habits that will mean you reach those goals. Tweak, adjust and keep sharing information with ChatGPT to help you refine the answers for each so they work for you.
5️⃣ Keep It Alive
Your vision and goals are constantly evolving as we do and as life does. Things come up, life happens and sometimes what is right for us changes. And so to make this process meaningful, to ensure that when you get to the end of 2025 and come to do your reflection, make sure you set up regular check-ins to make sure that how you’re showing up each day, week and month is bringing you closer to making your vision, your reality.
And that’s it! If you go through this process we would love to hear from you! Please let us know your vision for 2025 in the comments below so we can hold it for and with you too!
